Open plan kitchen

The kitchen was designed by myself and built and installed by Box Hill Joinery, a local manufacturer. The kitchen is open plan in our main living space so needed to have a quality feel that I would be happy living with all the time. It is based around an island unit which was sized to use a full slab of granite with a second slab being cut in half for the back counter and also in the utility area.

Granite Worktop Installation

I went to a number of stone yards to source the granite and picked the two slabs that were required. The granite is a leathered matt finish which strangely feels quite soft to the touch, and doesn’t create distracting reflections like polished granite tends to.

Cutting granite worktop

The granite was mainly cut off site but needed some minor work such as finishing the sink cut outs on site.

Lifting granite into place

Manhandling the full size slab in to position.

finished kitchen

The island and lower cupboards are all finished in book matched oak veneer that is solid lipped and stained to match the oak cladding around the staircase.

It is possible to see the grain follow all of the way around the island unit where it was all cut from the same tree. The doors are handle less with a gap between the floating counter top and the doors where you can fit your hand to open them.
